Dr. Edwin Ellis has conducted scientific research on
instructional strategies for over 30 years, and is devoted to promoting the
implementation of these research- based methods in the education system. One of
the products of Dr. Ellis’s tireless commitment to improving instructional
methods in the areas of reading comprehension and writing has been the “Frame”
graphic organizer. In his book, The Framing Routine, (1998, Mastermind
L.L.C.), this renowned Professor reports that, “In one study, middle school
students with Learning Disabilities wrote an average of 97 more words on their
post-test writing samples after they had learned to use the Frame graphic organizer when
planning their writing.”
This extremely useful graphic organizer performs dual roles in literacy development. According to Dr. Ellis, “When students identify main ideas and supporting details from text as they read, and list them on the Frame graphic organizer, comprehension of the written material tends to dramatically increase. Likewise, when students use this type of graphic organizer as a ‘think sheet’ for planning their writing, the quality of their writing tends to improve in organization of ideas, fluency and proper writing conventions.” To view one of Dr. Ellis’s informative publications titled, “Power Tools for Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities",(2007)”, click on this title.
The use of the Frame sequence chart is supported by the Common Core State Standards from second grade to high school in CCSS.ELA-Literacy W.1.3; W.2.3; W.3.3A; W.4.3; W.5.3.C; W.6.3.C; W.7.3.C; W.8.3.C.
