A National Council of Teachers of English website described a literacy strategy in which, after reading a book (read aloud or shared reading), students will receive a 3 column graphic organizer chart to write down questions they would like to answer. Students will write their questions in the first column of the chart, they will write the title of the source they read for information, in the second column of the chart, and the answers to their questions in the third column of the chart. Then, with guided instruction, the teacher shows the students how to arrange their answers into a paragraph. Using a writing frame graphic organizer is an effective way for students to arrange their information from the "Answers" column into a paragraph. The teacher applies the strategy routinely until the students can use the graphic organizer independently and produce their own writing. The literacy development strategy is called QUIP, meaning, "Questions Into Paragraphs". Created by Maureen McLaughlin and Mary
Beth Allen from their book: Guided Comprehension: A

The graphic organizer-guided literacy plan above encourages the use of two or more sources from which to gather information on a topic, and produce a summary paragraph or report. The level of literature may be changed to meet the needs of the reader. Also, the degree of independent or group work during the facilitation of the QUIP strategy can be adjusted according to student ability. This lesson model with adjustments for student ability is supported by Common Core State Standards in First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth Grade: CCSS. ELA-Literacy.
