Dr. Reutzel advises using graphic organizers Before, During, and After reading to support comprehension and learning, as well as to facilitate the vital reading functions of Awakening Background Knowledge, Questioning, Monitoring, Visualizing, and Summarizing.
There are graphic organizers to support every level of developing reader and writer. A slide show below showcases some graphic organizers to use before, during, and after reading.

Character analysis has become increasingly popular in reading exploration. This facet of literature study adds an extra element of visualization which initiates intrigue for reader engagement when facilitated in conjunction with discussion and monitoring through the use of specifically designed graphic organizers.
The Florida
Center for Reading Research
has
produced an elaborate lesson plan on narrative text comprehension and character analysis, which implements a wide array of graphic organizers. To access this FCRR lesson plan click here. The use of character-analysis graphic organizers is supported for reading in Common Core State Standards, Grades 1-10 : CCSS. ELA-Literacy RL.1.3; RL.2.3; RL.3.3; RL.4.3; Rl.5.3; RL.6.3; RL.7.3; RL.8.3; RL.9-10.3. .

ELA-Literacy RL.K.1; RL.1.1; RL.2.1; RL.3.1: RL.4.1. The use of Complex Story Plot graphic organizers such as the one featured in the SHOW CASE above are supported for middle school and high school application in CCSS. ELA-Literacy RL.6.5; RL.9-10.5. Graphic organizers which facilitate reader inference-making are supported for middle and high school students in CCSS. ELA-Literacy RL.5.1; RL.6.1; RL.7.1; RL.8.1; RL.9-10.1.
